Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro dies

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro dies aged 90bbat3us

By Marc Frank and Nelson Acosta | HAVANA

Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary who built a communist state on the doorstep of the United States and for five decades defied U.S. efforts to topple him, died on Friday. He was 90.

A towering figure of the 20th century and Cold War icon, Castro stuck to his ideology beyond the collapse of Soviet communism and remained widely respected in parts of the world that struggled against colonial rule.

Castro had been in poor health since an intestinal ailment nearly killed him in 2006. He formally ceded power to his younger brother, Raul, two years later.

US election results: Donald Trump defeats Hillary Clinton to win

Republican Donald Trump has defeated his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the US election, according to ABC election analyst Antony Green, and will become America’s next president.

Key points:

  • Donald Trump will become America’s 45th president, according to Antony Green
  • Mr Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in some key swing states
  • Mrs Clinton will not be speaking publicly tonight
  • We’re expecting to hear from Mr Trump soon

Both candidates had early victories but Mr Trump picked up the key battleground states of Ohio, Florida and North Carolina.

Mrs Clinton will not be speaking publicly this evening.

Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta told a room full of supporters at Clinton’s election rally in New York to go home.

“Several states are too close to call so we’re not going to have anything more to say tonight,” he said.

“You should get some sleep. We’ll have more to say tomorrow,” Mr Podesta said.

While Green has called it for the Republican, some US media outlets are yet to announce a Trump win.

“There are the current numbers, 259 for the Republicans, if you give Pennsylvania the Republicans, 279 and they can quote that,” Green said on ABC24.

“We think the Republicans will win Wisconsin as well. So they’ve got two paths. But Associated Press have given Pennsylvania away and they’ve got 97 per cent of the votes counted of the precincts counted in Pennsylvania and the Republicans are more than 1 per cent ahead.

“It looks like that’s the state that’s put Donald Trump over the quota and into the White House.”

Predictions say the GOP will also hold onto a majority in the House and gain control of the Senate.

The shock result came after opinion polls over the weekend showed Mrs Clinton went into polling day with the advantage over her Republican rival.

Clinton supporters in shock

North America correspondent Stephanie March is at Hillary Clinton’s headquarters in New York where supporters are visibly devastated.

“Hillary Clinton and her supporters had hoped to make history today by electing the first female president in the United States,” she said.

“Heading into election day polls had pointed to a victory for the Democrats nominee but losses key states south eastern of in Florida and North Carolina significantly narrowed her path to victory.”

Washington bureau chief Zoe Daniel is also at the headquarters:

“People have literally sat around in this venue on the floor, staring into space, some people are in tears. People are hugging each other,” Ms Daniel said.

“There’s just a sense of pervasive shock. Not only that Hillary Clinton appears to have lost the election, but that it has been such a complete and utter rout”.

Mrs Clinton had a lead in Florida of one percentage point and a win there would likely have secured her the presidency.

But Mr Trump enjoyed a swing in the state, winning it back from the Democrats.

More to come.

The Second Presidential Debate: Hillary Clinton And Donald Trump

Donald Trump was grilled on his recent lewd comments about women  revealed within the last 48 hours . Trump aides and supporters accused the moderators of being unfair.

The second presidential debate of 2016 is in the books, which means it’s time for Donald Trump’s supporters to complain about the event’s moderators.

The GOP nominee had a few terse exchanges Sunday night with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and ABC News correspondent Martha Raddatz during the debate at Washington University in St. Louis. Throughout the roughly 90-minute debate, the two moderators regularly pushed Trump for specific answers to questions on issues ranging from the civil war in Syria to the recent scandal over lewd comments he made on video in 2005.

During and after his debate with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Trump’s supporters and his campaign aides tweeted complaints that the two moderators were showing bias by cutting short Trump’s lengthy responses while also pushing him for clarity when he gave vague answers.

Hurricane Matthew slams into Haiti

‘The Situation … Is Truly Catastrophic’; Hurricane Matthew Slams Into Haiti

Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET with further states of emergency in the U.S.

Hurricane Matthew crashed into southwestern Haiti as a Category 4 storm Tuesday morning, dumping rain and scouring the land with maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour.

It is the first Category 4 storm to make landfall in Haiti since 1964, when Hurricane Cleo also hit the island nation’s southwestern peninsula.

At 7 a.m. local time, the eye of Hurricane Matthew sat over Les Anglais, Haiti. The hurricane is so large and powerful that people in a 40-mile radius from its center were under hurricane warnings, and tropical storm-force winds were lashing areas as far as 185 miles away, near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

News reports said that at least four people in the Caribbean have died as a result of the storm, including two in Haiti.

According to the Miami Herald, radio reports from the southern port of Les Cayes described shoulder-high floodwaters and sea water rushing into people’s homes farther east in Cote de Fer. The National Hurricane Center predicts the storm surge from Hurricane Matthew is between 7 and 10 feet above normal tides.

Kim Kardashian robbed

UPDATE 5:49 p.m. ET: Hours after the terrifying incident, Kim Kardashian reunited with husband Kanye West in New York City on Monday, October 3. The reality star was greeted by West at Teterboro Airport around 11 a.m., sources told Us Weekly. The couple were then escorted back to their apartment downtown in a 15-car motorcade.2993901000000578-3122059-image-a-88_1434141502775

Kardashian, 35, was also reunited with their two kids, North, 3, and Saint, 9 months, who were safely in NYC when the Selfish author was robbed at gunpoint early Monday morning in Paris.

According to a rep for Matilda the Musical, North attended a matinee performance of the Broadway show with two other children, a nanny and a security guard on Sunday, October 2. “They sat in the audience and then afterward, North came backstage and met the kids in the company, including the girl who played Matilda,” the rep told Us. “A good time was had by all!”

As police continue to investigate Kardashian’s terrifying incident, a source told Us that the social media maven doesn’t have any plans to fire her longtime bodyguard, Pascal Duvier, who was not present during the robbery.

“Pascal was with Kourtney and Kendall at L’Arc Nightclub. Kim felt safe at the apartment by herself,” the insider tells Us of Duvier’s whereabouts. “Kim is not blaming Pascal. She felt completely safe at the Paris apartment and doesn’t believe this is his fault in any way.”

The E! personality was last seen entering her NYC apartment with West Monday morning. Her diamond engagement ring — which was reportedly stolen by the thieves — was noticeably missing from her ring finger.

iPhone security expert Andrew McDonnell told Us Weekly on Monday that the burglars, who also reportedly took two iPhones believed to belong to Kardashian, will likely not be able to obtain personal information if the reality star’s devices were set with pass codes.

“For newer iPhones, the bottom line is that a strong pass code makes it nearly impossible for thieves to steal data,” McDonnell told Us. “If someone mugs you, takes your phone, or it’s stolen out of your hotel room, or you leave it in a movie theater, without the pass code, any iPhone from the past few years — I’m sure Kim Kardashian’s was that new — it’s going be extremely difficult to get data out of the phone without the pass code. And to make it impossible, you can lock the iPhone or erase it remotely using Apple’s ‘Find My iPhone’ Web application.”

E! told Us in a statement on Monday that KUWTK cameras were not rolling during the incident either.

“All of us at E! are incredibly thankful that Kim Kardashian West is safe, and we send her and her family our love and support,” the statement read. “Keeping Up With the Kardashians was not filming at the time of the robbery. Our focus right now is entirely on Kim’s well-being.”

UPDATE: A Paris police official tells Us Weekly that the five robbers were spotted escaping on bicycles after their organized raid. A local bar employee adds, “[Kim has] been popping in and out all the time during fashion week. … Unfortunately, too many people seem to know that she lives here.”

Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, also addressed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying Kardashian will “always be welcome in Paris.” Hidalgo said she’s confident that police will find those responsible, noting that the robbery “in no way calls into question police work or security of public space” in Paris.
